Guided Cycle Tours
We Leave Picton at 10am Saturday and arrive back on the following Sunday We will have a van accompanying us for the trip, this will help when we are prevented from covering the whole distance under our own steam for whatever reason, be it:- gravity, distance, weather, or the previous nights festivities.
We will be discovering some of the most picturesque, remote and non-tourist areas of New Zealand. Including:- our first night nestled between the Kaikoura Ranges and the Coast. Mt Lyford Ski Field, inland from Kaikoura and Hamner Springs. Maruia Springs with hot pools and the gateway to the St James walk way. Murchison, on the Buller River. St Arnaud: Beach Forest, Mountain Lakes, Ski field, and Rainbow Trout. Blenheim..Vineyards..mmmmmm! Picton, Queen Charlotte Sound remote and accessible by boat only.
Weather I have cycled the South Island many times and have always enjoyed fine weather in May, particularly around Nelson. The days are shorter and the mornings are generally cool, clear and crisp...Stunning!
Physical Ability A few people have expressed concern at being able to cycle all the way. If the going gets too tough we have van to help transport us. We are expecting to cycle 4 hours a day, at a sedate pace (20km/hr). For those who want a bit more, there are days where we will be covering more ground and whilst I have scheduled for us to travel some of this distance by van, I would like to accompany those who would like to complete it by bike. Age is not a barrier!
Accommodation We will be at a Bed and breakfast each night. B&B's such as "The Old Convent"-Kaikoura, are being used. This is a remote, historic, boutique B&B with quality service (South Island standard not New York).
Meals All meals are included in the package (not alcohol) Dinner and breakfast will at the accommodation or a restaurant, and lunch as we travel. (Can you ride with one hand, up a hill, a sandwich in the other, and breathe at the same time? You can't? O.K. we'll stop for lunch.)
Other things to do apart from cycling or resting in the van. Kaikoura Swim with Dolphins, Whale Watching, or check out the seal colony Mt Lyford Spa pools, bush walks, mountain walks, 4WD tour and, depending on weather...skiing Maruia Natural Hot Pools, St James walkway, Maruia River, Beech forest Murchison White water rafting on the Buller St Arnaud Walk, run, swim or take a boat around Lake Rotoiti and Fish for Trout Blenheim Vineyard tour Picton Water taxi to a remote bay on Queen Charlotte Sound for last night
Cycling time each day is a suggestion only and we can easily jump in the van if we want. Tuesday most of us will be covering some of the distance by van.
