At Paparangi you will have to exercise your own skills against those of the Giant Motu Red Deer in a fair chase, free range situation. We are managing these majestic wild animals under a Quality DEER MANAGEMENT Program with the help of a professional wildlife biologist.
Hunt Paparangi's 900Ha of Native Bush as well as the neighbouring Raukumara Forest Park.
We have hunter's cabins available during your hunting trip to Paparangi. The first one Vision is close to the Motu River at 460 metres. The 2nd Awatea at 800 metres faces the East and gets the early morning sun and some amazing views.
There is only ever one party of hunters at Paparangi Ventures at any one time, which ensures a certain degree of safety. There is also a minimum number of 2 hunters, and a maximum of 6 hunters per party. Guides are available for hunting on Paparangi and within the Raukumara Forest Park.
For hunting parties that are not experienced in hunting in New Zealand's Forests, we would strongly recommend having a guide. Not only for safety reasons, but your chances of securing a trophy are much greater using the local knowledge of your guide - available on Paparangi and also within the Raukumara Forest Park.
N.B, We have now been granted DOC concessions to guide within the Raukumara Forest Park.
DEER HUNTING at Paparangi Ventures
Paparangi's deer hunting season opens on the 20th March each year and ends on the 30th September.
There are two main periods for harvesting deer during the season. The first is from opening day (20th March) to 30th April and includes the Roar, or Rutting season, when the stags are holding a harem of hinds and defend a given territory by roaring at would be intruders, (which makes them easier to locate).
The second period is from mid August to closing day, 30th September. The idea behind this period is that we can notify hunters via our August newsletter when hinds can be harvested and how many we need to cull.
Basic guidelines for hunting at Paparangi, from 20th March 2002 until further notice are: Stags over 8 points, and weaner animals of both sexes, can be harvested, but no hinds are being harvested yet. One animal per person.
PIG HUNTING at Paparangi Ventures
There are a good number of wild pigs amongst the hills of Paparangi. They are descendants of 100 domestic pigs that were released by the then owners in the mid 80's; and the wild Captain Cookers, which are descended from pigs brought to New Zealand by Captain Cook in 1773.
Our season for hunting pigs is from 1st May to 30th September each year. Please contact us for more information, or read our hunting newsletters. One animal per person and you can bring 2 dogs per person.
GOAT HUNTING at Paparangi Ventures
Small numbers of wild goats can be found, and due to our management programme we are seeing some good trophy goats (30 inches or more). Goats are kept to low numbers because of the devastating effects they can have on our Native Forest.
Goats are excellent for young hunters to learn basic hunting skills on. We are trying to build a herd of trophy billy goats by using the same management techniques as the Quality Deer Management Programme. During late April - early May we cull out some Nannies and young goats which also helps with the Pig Hunting which starts 1st May (pigs east the carcasses of dead goats).
